Finding the Perfect Dress: From Search to Fittings

Finding the Perfect Dress: From Search to Fittings

Created on: 28/02/2025
Updated on: 28/02/2025

Finding the perfect wedding dress can feel like a big task! In this blog we’ll walk you through how to find the dress you’ll feel amazing in, from your initial search right through to fittings and final adjustments.

1. Starting Your Search: Where to Begin

Do Your Research

Before heading out to bridal boutiques, it’s important to do some homework. Start by researching local bridal shops and reading reviews. Look at websites, social media, and bridal magazines to get an idea of what’s available and what might suit your style.

Set Your Budget

Knowing your budget is key here as it’s very easy to get carried away! So a budget will help you filter your options. Don't forget to factor in alterations, accessories, and shoes, as these will add to the final cost.

Booking Appointments

Once you’ve found a few shops you like, book your appointment. Bridal shops can get busy, especially on weekends, so it’s best to arrange a time in advance. When booking, ask how long the appointment will last and whether there’s a limit on the number of dresses you can try on. Most shops offer one-on-one consultations, where a consultant will help you find dresses based on your preferences.

2. Finding Your Style: What Will Suit You?

Start with Your Wedding Theme

Think about your wedding venue, the overall theme, and what kind of day you have in mind. Is it formal or more laid-back? The dress should reflect this, so consider how different styles will work in the context of your ceremony and reception.

Try on Different Styles

When you start trying on dresses, be open to styles you might not expect. It’s easy to fall in love with a certain look, but the dress you think you want might not be the one you feel most comfortable in. Try a variety of styles, from A-line to sheath, to see what flatters your shape and fits your vision for the day.

Apps and Websites for Inspiration

There are several apps and websites that can help guide your search. Bridify is great for browsing dresses by style, and The Knot offers a helpful “dress finder” tool that suggests dresses based on your preferences. Using these resources before your appointment can help you save time and focus on dresses that are most likely to suit your taste.

3. Booking Fittings and Understanding the Process

When to Start Searching

Start looking for your dress around 9–12 months before your wedding. This gives you plenty of time to explore different options and order the dress, as most bridal shops require several months to deliver a dress.

Booking Fittings

Once you've found your dress, you’ll need to book fittings. Most brides need at least two or three fittings, depending on alterations needed. Fittings are where the dress is tailored to your exact measurements, so it fits perfectly on the day. Bring along any shoes or accessories you plan to wear to help with sizing.

When to Book Your Fittings

Aim to book your first fitting around 6–8 months before the wedding. This will leave enough time for alterations, including adjustments to the hemline or the bust. As well as trying on the dress at each fitting, this is the time to make any tweaks so it’s just right for you.

4. The Final Touches: Accessories and Customisation

Think About Accessories Early On

Once your dress is chosen, think about the accessories. Will you wear a veil? What about jewellery or shoes? Bring these along to your fittings so everything works together.

Customising Your Dress

If you want to personalise your dress, this is the time to do it. Many dresses can be customised with added lace, sleeves, or even a change of fabric. Ask the bridal consultant what options are available to make the dress your own.

Don’t Leave Alterations Too Late

Last-minute alterations can be stressful, so don’t leave them until the week before your wedding. Aim to have all changes finalised at least a few weeks before the big day to avoid any last-minute panic.

The most important thing is finding the dress that feels right! And you’ll know it when you see it!

Happy couple
