Adjusting to Married Life

Adjusting to Married Life

Created on: 30/11/2024
Updated on: 30/11/2024

You’re officially married! Here’s some tips to help you both adjust to married life and this next new chapter!

You did it! You pulled off an amazing wedding, danced until the early hours, and now you’re officially married! But after all the excitement, the real journey begins and it can be, well frankly, a bit nerve-wracking.

Here’s some tips to help you get settled and begin as you mean to go on in this next new chapter of your life!

Create Routines That You Both Look Forward To

As newlyweds, one of the best ways to start this journey is to build routines that give you something to look forward to. Little habits, like Saturday morning coffee together or a Friday night movie, give you a sense of stability and some “us” time between your busy schedules.

Cliché but … Keep the Romance Alive!

Whether it’s leaving a cute little note, planning a surprise dinner, or even just a random “I love you,” these small gestures keep that spark alive.

If you can, try to plan a mini-break or even a “staycation” every so often. A change of scenery, even for a night, can give you both a chance to reconnect and spend some quality time together.

Have Your Own Interests and Friendships

Being married doesn’t mean you have to be joined at the hip 24/7! Keeping up with hobbies and friends outside of your marriage is not only healthy, it also gives you something to share and talk about with your other half.

Set Some Goals for the Future

These can be big or small: planning a dream holiday, saving for a house, or even just trying out a new restaurant every month. Working toward something together gives you a sense of purpose and makes your relationship feel like a partnership.

Keep Things Real with Money Talk

Money can be one of the trickiest parts of marriage, so it’s a good idea to be open about finances from the start. Decide how you want to handle expenses, whether it’s a joint account, splitting bills, or another system that works for both of you.

Being on the same page financially can reduce stress and prevent future disagreements. And while these conversations might feel a little awkward, they're worth it!

Communication Is Your Best Friend!

Communication is key and is at the root of most arguments! Check in with each other regularly, whether it’s a casual chat at the end of the day or a more serious discussion about life plans..

Learning to communicate openly also helps when conflicts come up (because they will). When things get tense, try to stay calm and remember you’re both on the same team. A little empathy goes a long way!

Balance Time Together with Time Apart

Of course, quality time together is really important, but it’s equally essential to have some time apart. Give each other space to breathe, pursue hobbies, or even just relax solo. Having time to recharge individually can make your time together feel even more meaningful.

And here's 5 secrets of a happy marriage ... from couples who’ve been there!

When it comes to marriage advice, who better to ask than couples who’ve been there, done that!

“Pick your battles.”

Not every disagreement has to be a debate. Sometimes, the best thing you can do is let the small stuff go.

“Laugh together every day.”

Life can get serious, but laughter can keep things light. Find humour in the little moments and don’t be afraid to laugh at yourself.

“Show appreciation regularly.”

Expressing gratitude is huge. It doesn’t have to be grand gestures; a simple “thank you” or “I love that you did this” shows your partner they’re valued.

“Listen more than you speak.”

Listening builds understanding. Give each other the space to share thoughts and feelings without judgment.

“Never stop dating each other.”

Keep that “first date” feeling alive by planning special dates, even after years together. It’s easy to get comfortable, but intentional effort keeps the romance alive.

Adjusting to married life doesn’t happen overnight, and that’s OK. Marriage is a long, evolving journey, so approach it with patience, understanding, and a sense of humour!

Happy couple
